Sedation Learning Center

Does the thought of going to the dentist scare you?

If so, you’re not alone. Many patients have preconceptions or negative experiences that make a visit to the dentist a frightening experience. But we at Village Dental can help you. We strive to create a calm and relaxed environment for our patients, and part of that is offering sedation dentistry. We administer this process through nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) or an IV. As a board-authorized sedation practice, we are able to keep our patients relaxed through the entire process of their appointment and alleviate anxiety or worries.

Free laughing gas. Flexible Hours. Flexible Payment Options.

SEDATION LEARNING CENTER

We have put together this comprehensive learning center for those patients that want to learn more about sedation dentistry and how it works. We hope these questions and answers will help you make a decision to choose sedation dentistry and get the dental care that you deserve.

Sedation dentistry works differently depending on which method of sedation you choose. We offer two types of sedation at Village Dental.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most common form of sedation and is administered through inhalation. This sedation works best for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. You will recover quickly and be able to resume your normal activities immediately.

IV sedation will be placed by your doctor and administers a medication to help you reach a deeper state of relaxation. This is best for patients with more moderate to severe anxiety or for those that require longer or more complex procedures. You will need to have someone accompany you to your appointment because the effects will take a few hours to wear off and it is unsafe to drive yourself home from your appointment.

In most cases, you will not feel anything. You will experience very little discomfort and many patients wake up feeling relaxed with almost no memory of their treatment.

No, you will be conscious and responsive. Still, you will be in a deep state of relaxation.

Yes, sedation dentistry is closely regulated by the law. It is a safe and effective way for patients to get the dental treatment they require. Your doctor will help you decide if sedation is right for you and which type of sedation will be best for your treatment.

The time it takes for the sedation to wear off depends on which form of sedation you received, how long your treatment is, and how quickly your body can recover. With nitrous oxide, you will recover immediately after your treatment. With IV sedation, the effects can take a few hours to wear off and you should have someone accompany you to your appointment that can drive you home. After your treatment, you should not operate machinery, drive, or drink alcohol.

If you experience dental anxiety, you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Both children and adults can benefit from sedation. If you experience any of the following fears or concerns, ask your doctor about sedation as an option for your next dental appointment:

  • Extreme dental anxiety or fear of visiting the dentist
  • Fear of needles and/or shots
  • PTSD from a dental experience
  • Sensitive teeth, strong gag reflex, tolerance to numbing procedures
  • Sensitivity to smells or noises at the dentist
  • Need for complex treatment
  • Desire for a comfortable dental treatment
